animal swimming pools (canine & equine)
It has been known for many years that Swimming helps to improve general fitness and cardiovascular stamina, it improves muscle tone and is helpful in recovering from injury or surgery.

Taking this process a step further water is also used for the same purposes but within the animal kingdom. Horses Dogs, Lions Tigers and many many more, frequently benefit from the use of water, providing them with a quality of life that in certain cases would not be achievable.

Canine Swimming Pools.
Video snapshotCanine therapy pools often come pre formed as a one piece construction allowing the owner to situate them above ground, totally in the ground or most commonly half in and half out of the ground (this allows easy ingress and egress for both dog and therapist). The pool water undergoes a circulation process similar to that of a conventional swimming pool where water is filtered heated and treated.

It is considered better to swim dogs in heated water since cold water causes constriction of the blood vessels near the skin and to the superficial muscles (those just under the skin) which restricts the flow of blood making the muscles less efficient.

In a canine pool most often the therapist enters the water with the dog, providing support and guidance throughout the bathing session, each animal is provided with its own buoyancy aid and normally undertakes its individual routine of exercise.

Entry to the pool is commonly via a ramp up to the pool side and then down into the water but for the less agile or incapacitated dog a hoist is normally provided.

Built into the water circulation system is usually a swim jet or counter current this enables the dog to swim against a resistance to aid recovery.

Some facilities have in addition to the swimming pool a canine spa pool, allowing the dog to undertake its exercise programme in the main swimming pool and then undertake a spa session where the stationary dog is massaged by hot water jets relieving aching muscles and increasing any healing process.

Additional to this the use of the underwater treadmill is becoming more popular, in this process the dog enters the glass tank which has a rolling floor as its base, when the animal is settled water is brought into the tank at a depth relevant to the animal and its treatment. When the treadmill begins to move the animal walks, supported by the volume of water and at the same time the therapist can observe the stride and walking abilities and undertake the necessary progression of treatments.
