Wentworth Leisure Centre, Hexham, Northumberland

Converted from: Sodium Hypochlorite (liquid Bleach)
to hth Briquettes dosed via an Easiflo 3 system

When first opnend, the facility was originally commissioned with 1000ltrs of bulk storage Sodium Hypochlorite. However within 2 years, the pool was experiencing numerous problems with water quality including a green tinge to the lack lustre pool water.

Problems incuded:

  • Extremely high TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) levels, on average 2000mg/l plus extra dilution required to keep these under control.
  • Low calcium concentration - resulting in the purchase of calcium flake to keep water within acceptable parameters
  • High levels of combined chlorine - resulting in bad odours in the hall.
  • Customer complaints of stinging eyes.
  • High CO2 usage for pH correction.
  • Large water and heating bills.
  • Up to 13 deliveries of chemical per year.

Following a comprehensive plant room survey and full written report by the Technical Services team form Lonza, the site agreed with their recommendations of a simpler system that could address the issues listed above and the installation of an hth Easiflo 3 dosing system was undertaken.

Benefits of conversion:

Total Dissolved Solids reduced to 900 mg/l. No extra dilution of the pool water necessary.
No need to purchase calcium flake and sodium bicarbonate..

David Lloyds, Leeds

Converted from: Salt Generation
to hth Granules dosed via a Pump and Tank System

David Lloyd Leeds originally had an onsite generation of chlorine (salt system). The site had a number of issues with the system keeping up to the chlorine levels required, so a second unit was installed to try and produce enough chlorine to meet the pool’s demand.

Throughout the next 6 years the site had the following problems:-

  • Extremely high total dissolved solids (TDS) levels, with an average of 5000 mg/l
  • To try and keep TDS under control, the site had to complete 3 backwashes per week, resulting in large gas and water bills.
  • Severe corrosion of the metal fixtures and fittings around the plant room
  • Salt stalactites coming from the plate heat exchanger pipe connections
  • Precipitation of salt and corrosion around the filter lids
  • Customers complaining of salty tasting water
  • Pool water with a green tinge that was not inviting to swimmers
  • A high usage of sodium bisulphate as the pH correctant
  • Filter valves were replaced annually as the corrosive nature of the pool water was disintegrating them

Following a comprehensive plant room survey and full written report by the Technical Services team form Lonza, the site agreed with their recommendations of a simpler system that could address the issues listed above. The survey highlighted the amount of electricity being used by the salt system, the amount of gas and water being wasted as well as the damage the salt was doing to the plant room systems. A 500 litre pump and tank system to take hth granules was installed.

Benefits of conversion:

Total Dissolved Solids reduced to 700 mg/l, with a much reduced dilution rate being required
Only 1 backwash required per week - electricity and gas bills reduced
Water no longer corrosive, leading to fewer breakdowns on metal parts of the pool plant room
Customers have commented on a noticeable improvement in the air and water quality
No need to purchase calcium flake and sodium bicarbonate
A saving of 50% on the pH correction bill
Expensive maintenance call outs reduced to once every 6 months compared to once per fortnight.
