Sample bottle
As stated earlier the water sample required should be taken from approximately 30cm (12") below the surface of the pool water and should be taken in a dedicated plastic sample bottle.
A proprietary bottle can be purchased dedicated to water testing allowing the user to take water from the required depth without difficulty. Attached to the top is a long handle and stopper mechanism. Indicated on the handle is the recommended depth to which the bottle should be immersed when taking the water sample. When this is reached a central plunger rod is depressed, allowing water to enter the sample bottle and be closed off on withdrawal from the pool water.
There are two main types of pool water test kit, a Photometer and a Comparator.
Both are described below

Comparator Test Kits
These are simple and easy to operate water sample test kits. As the name suggests they allow the operator to compare the colour produced by adding a chlorine presence indicator tablet to a water sample with a range of colours on a revolving disc.
These test kits should not be used without a good light source, natural north facing daylight is adequate but better still is a light box that may be attached to the disc box ensuring a consistent supply of light.
Photometric Test Kits
The most up to date and accurate equipment for testing pool water is the photometric kit. These remove problems that could occur by operator colour blindness or lack or excess of light when using comparator type kits. They work by passing a beam of light through the coloured sample and automatically calculate the result given in a digital readout. They are more expensive than the comparator type but do give consistently accurate results. Several types are currently available and it is beyond the scope of this document to discuss the pros and cons of each manufacturer and their own particular models. Irrespective of which type is chosen the manufacturers operating instructions and maintenance schedules should be strictly adhered to get the best performance from the unit.
